Cruising to Deep Creek Lake

The weather did not look very promising as Donna, Paula, Jenni, Kris, Gaby, Mary Ann, Monique, and her husband Bill headed out for the overnight ride to Suzanne and David’s home at Deep Creek Lake. We hoped the overcast sky and slight drizzle would change as the day went on. It did. At first for the better, and then for the worse.

When we stopped for lunch in Hancock, MD it appeared the sky was clearing. So everyone took off his or her rain gear. While having lunch at the Park and Dine, it started to rain. So on went the rain gear once again. The ride out 40 West was quite nice and the weather was not too bad. That changed when we got to Grantsville, MD. A cold front was moving through so the wind picked up and it started to really rain. Then the fog came. It was quite an adventure. Fortunately, we were within 25 miles of our destination and arrived safely.

Suzanne and David’s beautiful home is nestled in the woods in McHenry, MD. Everyone was happy to arrive in one piece and soon the bad weather was replaced by a warm fire and the company of good friends. The turkey and ham dinner was absolutely delicious.

That made up for the hardships of riding in the bad weather.
The weather on Sunday morning was cold and overcast, although the forecast called for clearing skies and temperatures around 70°. Gaby led the group back on 219 South to 50 East. The scenery was beautiful, especially since the leaves had started to turn color. Once we got down from the mountains the sky was blue and the weather warmed up quite a bit. The rest of the ride back was very enjoyable. One final treat was crossing the Potomac River at White’s Ferry.

Despite the challenging weather on Saturday, the trip was a success. Hopefully we can do this each fall. Thanks to everyone who went. Thanks to Donna and Gaby for leading a leg of the ride. And a special thank you to Suzanne and David for inviting us to their beautiful home.

Cruising with Donna

Well, fall is definitely here. The days are getting shorter and the leaves are starting to fall from the trees. The temperatures can be a bit chilly in the morning, although the days are still warm. This can be the most enjoyable time of the year to ride a motorcycle, yet for some riders the change in seasons means that riding will have to wait until next spring.

I hope you consider riding all season long. Even in the coldest weather you can be comfortable wearing special clothing. Plus, the starkness of the landscape once all the leaves have fallen has its own beauty.

Whether you decide to continue riding this year or not, just remember that the Capitol Cruisers still has many opportunities to enjoy motorcycling. While we will still have our monthly meetings and rides, we will also be having our annual Holiday Party in December. We also will continue with our fundraising efforts for the Latina Victims of Domestic Violence program. We will also have a booth at Rockville Harley-Davidson’s Open House on December 3. Plans are also in the works to participate with other WOW chapters at the International Motorcycle Show in January.
