May 2005 On Saturday, April 16, Trish Roberts and I attended the bi-annual Open House at Rockville Harley-Davidson as representatives of the Capitol Cruisers and Women On Wheels. This year the store is celebrating it's 20th anniversary. We set up a table to present information on WOW and sell Ride MD t-shirts as well as 50/50 raffle tickets to raise money for our annual Susan G. Komen donation. The 50/50 raffle sales totaled $153, with half of that going to the winner. The winner turned out to be Neal Atwell, whose wife asked him to donate his half of the winnings back into the Susan G. Komen fundraiser. Thanks Mr. and Mrs. Atwell!! We also met many potential members and gave out a bunch of information. Many women riders were interested in finding other women to go on rides with as a way to gain experience. Even a few men took information to pass along. The weather was beautiful all day long and an excellent band called Welbilt provided music. Hot dogs and hamburgers continuously rolled of the grill to feed the masses. Many fine motorcycles came and went throughout the day. As usual, the sales were incredible. It was a great success in many ways! Thanks,
Cruising with Donna Back in 2002 I returned to school to get my doctorate in social work. At the time I did not have a motorcycle (as a matter of fact, I hadn’t had a motorcycle since 1973!), and had absolutely no thoughts of buying one. That all changed in the spring of 2003 when I found myself looking at motorcycle websites and wondering if I was actually going to buy one. Well, I did and the rest of history. One big advantage of having a motorcycle now compared to over 30 years ago is that many more women ride them and this has resulted in the growth of organizations like Women On Wheels. I never would have imagined that an organization like this existed when I bought my motorcycle a couple of years ago. For icing on the cake, there was even a local chapter. I came to my first meeting of the Capitol Cruisers in June 2003 and haven’t missed a meeting since. As much as I have enjoyed being a part of the Capitol Cruisers, I will have to say goodbye, as June will be my last month as Chapter Director. I plan to get my PhD in June and have been offered a faculty position at the University of Georgia. While the good news is that Athens, Georgia, where I will be moving to, is the location of the 2006 WOW Ride-In, the sad news is that I will be moving some time in July.
