June 2004Lions and Tigers and ...Motorcycles? Oh My! The Capitol Cruisers are Newest Exhibit at the Zoo At the Guppy Gala on May 14, the newest exhibit at the National Zoo wasn’t pandas or white tigers, it was Yamahas, BMWs, Hondas, and Harley-Davidsons. Capitol Cruisers members Annalee Cardillo, Heather VanKeuren, Calista Fredericksen, Monique King, and Donna Leigh Bliss participated in this fundraising event for Friends of the National Zoo. This first of hopefully many community outreach events was a success as moms, dads, girls, boys, and even a wolf “oohed and aahed” at the sight of so many beautiful motorcycles. This family-oriented event also featured an incredible array of activities, games, entertainment, food, and animal encounters, as the Zoo welcomed strolling musicians, jugglers, moon bounces, and more in addition to the Capitol Cruisers. Many thanks to the staff and volunteers of FONZ for making us feel so welcome.
Cruising with Donna The Capitol Cruisers are growing by leaps and bounds. We have had 11 new members join us since the beginning of the year. This tremendous growth in membership brings new opportunities and new challenges for the chapter. How do we accommodate so many new women? How do we make sure that new riders don’t fall through the cracks? What other kinds of social activities can we provide? I have thought quite a bit about these questions. While I try to contact new members, sometimes I could use some help. I think it is important that new members feel welcome and find a way to get involved. This is especially important for new riders. Would someone be willing to help me coordinate new rider rides? Women On Wheels® talks about how providing social activities is the primary purpose of a WOW chapter. Should the Capitol Cruisers be offering more social activities beyond our monthly meeting and monthly ride? How about special social activities like going to a baseball game? We are very fortunate to have a collegiate baseball league with a local team that plays at Montgomery Blair High School. How about meeting up at Dominic’s and riding (it’s a 5 minute ride) to go see a ballgame? What about more community outreach events? The Guppy Gala was a fabulous success. What about an event with children? Do you have any ideas? What about supporting charitable causes? While the Capitol Cruisers has supported the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, are there other causes can we support? Are there other ways we can fundraise? Some of you have raised these and others questions. Please think about these questions. I invite you to discuss your ideas at the June 8 meeting.
